Keith Olberman's Special Comment on Health Care
OK, so you're happily painting and I am glued to the television on the subject of health care. I admit that a lot of my creative energy is going into this right now. It's sort of like trying to not to see/hear a train wreck if you happen to be standing there.
So herewith, a ten-minute catch-up in case you missed it:

What is wrong with my fellow Americans? Are we totally brain washed into believing that the Govt's role is not to provide health, education and social security to it's people? Will it always be "every man for himself" against corporate greed run amok? Rich vs Poor?
The Republican Party of "NO" understands that obstructionist tactics work when the voting audience is ignorant, gullible, or otherwise easily misled (which sadly, is a fairly apt definition of the US voting public). They deviate from the core discussion, introducing irrelevant topics (death panels, illegal immigrants, abortion issues), and divert attention from the core of the discussion. It is also FEAR MONGERING.
The following is childish I suppose, but somehow it felt satisfying that any respect for Joe Lieberman went out the same window that he tossed the public option and the Medicare buy-in compromise that was to replace it.
If you're frustrated and want to do something, try this: Tell "Susan G. Komen for the cure" to remove Hadassah Lieberman.
Donations to find a cure for cancer should not be used to pay the salary of Hadassah Lieberman, former employee of the pharmaceutical and insurance lobbying complex and wife of Senator Joe Lieberman, who is pledging to kill health care reform while millions go untreated.
I irks the heck out of me to think that my donations to this charity have paid Hadassah to channel money to Joe....and I thought I was helping to fight breast cancer. Grrrrr.

It's not over yet.....I'm convinced that we can still make a difference. If we do lose this battle with the Insurance Companies, all of the Republicans and a couple of Blue Dog Democrats - won't you sleep better at night if you had made that call? We only lose when we stop the fight.

I listen to c-span while I'm working in the studio. This is the kind of stuff c-span junkies live for.
I want health care for all and I'm watching this like a hawk. I do not like what is happening in this country right now.
The divide between the rich and poor is growing rapidly. People are sinking into poverty and there is a distinct lack of compassion and civil discourse. Republicans and a handful of "blue dog democrats" are fighting every kind of reform with lies and disinformation. They count on people who don't have the time or inclination to search out the truth - simply ignore it and "hate all politicians."
Wake up guys - if you continue to reelect these lying fools, it's going to get worse for all of us as the "middle class" begins that long slow sad slide into poverty.
Most artists aren't rich. We get along but its getting harder. How many paintings does it take to pay a hospital bill? How many paintings does it take to pay health insurance rates that go up each year as our painting sales decrease. Most people don't have the spare cash to buy art in these troubled times.
Don't confuse me with facts - my mind is made up?
Dammit!
President Obama has made the decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan in order to "go after the guys who attacked us on 9/11."
Go to war for "peace?" I don't think so.
Architect Richard Gage speaks about the truth and lies of 9/11 and the "impossible" freefall speeds at which those towers came down.

Professor Niels Harrit of Copenhagen University in Denmark, who is an expert in nano-chemistry, says that they found such large quantities of nano-thermite in the dust from the WTC, that he believes it must have been brought into the WTC site by the tons.
Professor Steven Jones who also played a major role in this ground-breaking research, refers to this startling new evidence as “the loaded gun.”
So how come the "Official 9/11 Commission" did not look into the possible use of explosives?
Because they didn't want us to know about that.
Why?
Maybe it was an inside job?
And how come Bush and Rumsfeld refused to allow our army to capture Osama Bin Laden?
Because OBL didn't do it - despite the "official story" even the FBI says that there is no evidence on this man. And besides they don't make high tech nano-thermite in caves in Afghanistan.
So did jet fuel (which is kerosene) "melt" the steel in those towers?
No. Jet fuel can not melt steel.
Can a hundred story plus building "pancake" in freefall?
No. You don't need more than 9th grade physics to understand this.

Perspective as a Tool to Fool
Street Art can a lot of fun.
This kind of art requires much skill in perspective.
I think that the human figure is especially difficult to draw in extreme perspective.
Another important part of this art is to stand in the exact right spot in order to take the picture that enhances the illusion.
Perspective must be very accurate in order to create a successful illusion.
Perspective must be learned - and unless you're a genius (I'm not) - it is tough to reinvent.
I'd suggest a good book on this subject before you tackle a grand Street Art illusion.
I am sorry that I do not have the names of the various artists who made these paintings and took these photographs.
Some Street Artists use chalk.
And others use paint.
Street Art can be used in advertising.
It can be startling...a shark attack in the middle of a city?
Or carry a clever message.

Public Option Annie
When a bunch of artists protest - it can be fun, creative - and still make the point.
Republican pollster Bill McInturff (the force behind the 'Harry and Louise' ads in 1994) was the keynote speaker on the final day of AHIP's issues conference.
AHIP is the powerful insurance lobby that spends 5 million dollars a week trying to kill health care reform.
AHIP has resorted to out-right lying and scare tactics to block health care reform.
They sent letters that lie to seniors about what health care reform means for Medicare, and they issued a report on the costs of health care reform legislation that is so misleading that the reports embarrassed the authors who distanced themselves from the way AHIP used their work.
Every year, 45,000 people die because they can't get access to the health care they need. Yet AHIP continues to stand in the way of health care reform that would provide coverage to millions of Americans because the industry is more concerned with protecting profits than saving lives.

The Ethical Use of Gummi Bears?
I was reading labels on some new art materials this morning and thinking about keeping my paintings archival.
There's a lot of chemistry involved in traditional painting.
See my sad tales in blue at the end of this post.
I used to love the experiments we did in grade school chemistry class.
And here's one of my favorites that involves Gummi Bears.
Now, of course, we will no longer be allowed to take gummi bears on airplanes.
And we must consider the ethics of using gummi bears in experiments like these.
Besides a sweet tooth and a passion for red Gummi Bears, why did I post this?
I've made some awful stupid (sometimes chemical) mistakes. They took me by surprise - sort of like that video clip above.
!. I've got cracked paint from not following the "fat over lean" rule. I fixed that by following the rules and using Winsor-Newton's Liquin or Gamblin's Galkyd Lite in all of my layers.
2. I once got a tip from a painter I admired (and unfortunately trusted) in The Netherlands who said he used house paint to tone his canvas. When I did that a sweet little still life cracked and the paint flaked off after 4 years. Grrrrr, it still hurts.
3. I once mixed my own rabbit skin glue and it took a week to get that smell out of the studio. I had to toss out an expensive - but smelly - canvas.
4. I once painted a canvas with Genesis, forgot that I had used that special kind of paint and a year later I "varnished" it. The paint wrinkled up like an old prune and refused to dry. A painting I liked was ruined and had to be tossed. If you use Genesis Paint (it is wonderful non-toxic stuff) you must not mix other materials with it.
5. I stretched a piece of linen on regular stretchers - 24" x 30," and slaved over the painting for a long time. It hung framed in my studio one winter when the heat was turned off for a week. The linen suddenly dried out and shrunk snapping a long stretcher bar. The painting had to be restretched and I lost 6" off the right side. It wrecked the composition and I cannot sell it. Now I only use heavy-duty stretcher bars for work 20" x 24" and larger.

GOP Weekly Meetings at a Gun Range?
"A South Florida Republican said it was a mistake to shoot at a target with the initials of the Democratic Congresswoman he is trying to unseat. Candidate Robert Lowry made a brief statement to a local newspaper but refused to speak further Friday about the incident, which happened Tuesday during a weekly GOP meeting held at a gun range."
A friend pointed out that there was no mention at which end of the gun range they were meeting...there's always hope.

Why Opposition to Health Care Got So Ugly
I don't like what is going on in my country right now and it is a big distraction from painting for sure.
This past week the "teabaggers" and hate talkers like Beck and Limbaugh stepped even further over the line.
I've been completely stumped worrying about what is wrong with these people and how can we reach out and reason with them. But then I heard Tim Wise.
In a mere 6 minutes and 56 seconds, he makes the cause of this dissent very clear.

Eight Years Later
No, I'm not a "conspiracy theory" person. But today, the eighth anniversary of 9/11, I remain confused.
I watched in horror eight years ago as two airplanes in NYC hit two buildings - and inexplicably three buildings fell down!
I didn't understand then then and I don't understand it now.
When the 9/11 Commission Report finally came out, I read the entire thing.
Frustratingly there wasn't even one mention of why Building #7 also collapsed that day.
I'd guess that 9/11 was the most poorly investigated crime and yet the most highly censored story in American history - and I just don't get it.
My friend Dr. John Wyndham has a PhD in Physics and he says that the science just doesn't add up.
I have included a copy of his letter to the editor of our local newspaper where John sums it up nicely:
That explosive residue (nanothermite) in has been found to be in abundance in WTC dust samples chills me to the bone.
I'm not sure why, but most people's eyes glaze over on this subject and they seem to want to dismiss all legitimate questions despite the fact that many of the "official answers" just don't add up.
Shouldn't the "who" and "how" have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt before our Government blundered into two wars as "revenge for 9/11?"
If we knew that a planned demolition of these three buildings happened, would it change any of our ideas about who we think planned and carried out the attack?
Even now I am struggling to wrap my mind around this.
Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth was founded in 2006 by Richard Gage, a San Francisco Bay area based architect.

It is an organization of architectural and engineering professionals who are calling for a new investigation into the cause of the destruction of the Twin Towers and Building #7 (also known as the Solomon building).
Gage criticized the government agency NIST for not having investigated the complete sequence of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers and claims that "the official explanation of the total destruction of the World Trade Center skyscrapers has explicitly failed to address the massive evidence for explosive demolition."
